Marvellous Mountains

Overview

In this unit children will find out about mountains and how they are formed. They will use various sources such as books and Oddizzi to find out key information about their characteristics and the similarities and differences between a variety of mountain ranges. They will use this information and their advanced geographical vocabulary to write about these features. Children will investigate weather patterns and how these change over time (seasonally and a longer duration) and differ from the bottom to the top of the mountain. They will consider how these changes impact on human activity – link to tourism and climate change. Children have the opportunity to visit Pen-y-Ghent and are able to consolidate their compass and mapping skills in order to find their way to the summit. They will use this experience to explain some of the features of the Three Peaks and how they are different from each other. Children focus on the Himalayas and are able to write about the mountain range using geographical vocabulary to describe the physical and human characteristics, including settlements and economic activity.
