Year 5

Leeds Grand Mosque

Year 5 had the opportunity to visit Leeds Grand Mosque to deepen their understanding of Islam. During the visit, the children were able to explore the mosque, see its features up close, and ask questions in a real-life context. This hands-on experience helped bring their learning about Islamic beliefs and practices to life and gave them a greater appreciation of the religion and its traditions.

Leeds City Museum - Saxons

The children had the chance to handle real Anglo-Saxon museum objects and even emboss their own brooch! They explored stunning Anglo-Saxon gold jewellery from the West Yorkshire Hoard, searched for evidence of Christian conversion on ancient stone crosses, and discovered Northumbrian kings on tiny coins. The workshop also helped the children explore the big question: how did Britain change when the Romans left? It was a hands-on, interactive day that brought Anglo-Saxon history to life.

Wonderdome Planetarium

Year 5 had an amazing in-school experience with the WonderDome, bringing their learning about Earth and Space to life. The show helped pupils develop a greater understanding and appreciation of our place in the Universe. They explored the vast scale of space, watched demonstrations of how the Moon moves through its phases, and had the opportunity to ask the presenters their burning space-related questions.

The session not only supported the KS2 Earth & Space curriculum but also provided opportunities for creative writing, scientific thinking, and sharing ideas. It was awe-inspiring to see how the WonderDome sparked curiosity and a desire to learn even more about the Universe!

Boggle Hole - Whitby

Year 5 start their new school year with a residential to Robin Hoods Bay on the East Coast of Yorkshire.  Our accommodation for this weekend is the spectacular YHA Boggle Hole.  The Youth Hostel is in the perfect location, allowing children and staff to step out of the grounds of the hostel straight onto the beach.  We use the beach to study the erosion on the coastline, hunt for fossils and go rock pooling. We also visit Whitby and use our ordinance survey maps to match the symbols to the buildings in Whitby. We then head to the secluded setting of Falling Foss, here we spend the day walking around and exploring the woodland, which eventually leads to a spectacular waterfall!

We are really proud of what the health and safety officer said about this part of the trip during an unannounced inspection.

“The walk was interesting and entertaining for all. It involved scrambling and exploration. All of which was supervised without stifling their freedom and excitement.” Phil Jackson (Health and safety Inspector for Leeds City Council)

Jorvik Viking Centre – Year 5

Year 5 enjoyed an exciting school trip to the Jorvik Viking Centre, bringing their learning about Anglo-Saxon and Viking England to life. The children were guided by friendly Viking experts, taking part in interactive talks and activities that made history fun and engaging. Pupils explored the recreated Viking street of Coppergate, learning how it was discovered and investigating the evidence left behind by the people who lived there. The visit gave children a hands-on experience of Viking life and culture, making history memorable and exciting.

Maya Workshop

Year 5 had an exciting and immersive experience learning about the Maya. The children received a wonderful introduction to Maya history and culture, and they even got to meet a real-life archaeologist, making the day truly special! Videos of Dr Diane trekking through the rainforest, complete with the sounds of amazing wildlife, brought the rainforest topic to life.

During the workshop, the children carried out activities of historical enquiry, explored a large collection of Maya artefacts, and had plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Teachers also gained new ideas for future planning, ensuring the workshop was both fun and educational
