Overview
In this unit children learn about the 7 continents and 5 oceans that make up the world. They will use songs and jigsaw globes to understand the names, positions, locations and shapes of the continents. Children will understand that a group of countries is called a continent and large amount of water between each continent is called an ocean. Children will know that there is an invisible line around the centre of the Earth called the Equator and that a place is hotter if it is closer to the Equator and colder if it is further away from it. They will research and learn about Australia being a country in the continent of Oceania. Children will then zoom in to Bondi Beach in Australia and use their previous knowledge of Filey to compare the similarities and differences between the two places using their expanding geographical vocabulary. Children’s map and atlas skills will continue to develop as they move into KS2.
